CL T20 Cricket match reviews: October 13

CL T20 has two games on Tuesday; Wayamba took Victoria and the Sussex clash with Eagles. Following is the match review of both the games.

Wayamba v Victoria:

Wayamba 118 for 9 (Vandort 42, Kulatunga 41, Harwood 3-14) beat Victoria 103 for 4 (Hodge 44*) by 15 runs.

Player of the match SM Harwood (Victoria)

Wayamba Elevens defeated Victoria Bushrangers by 15 runs in last Group D match but it was not enough for the Sri Lankan side to progress to the next stage of the event as they missed out on net run-rate.

After posting a paltry 118 for nine on the board, Wayamba needed to restrict Victoria fewer than 83 to qualify for the next stage, but they failed to do so, thereby losing out a Super Eight spot to Delhi Daredevils and the Australian side.

Daredevils will now play their first league match in Bangalore on Saturday, and will return to the home turf to round off their league outing.

Brad Hodge top-scored for Victoria in their wayward run-chase with unbeaten 44 off 52 balls, while Andrew McDonald remained not out on 27 off 16 deliveries.

For Wayamba, Chanaka Welegedara was pick of the bowlers, scalping two wickets for 18 from his four overs.

Earlier, Shane Harwood (3/14) ripped apart the Wayamba Elevens batting line up while Clint MCKay (2/24) and Andrew McDonald (2/19) complemented him ably to restrict Wayamba to a paltry 118 for nine.

Jeevantha Kulatunga (42 off 39 balls) and Michael Vandort (42 off 44) were the lone bright spot in the Wayamba batting chart with the duo sharing 81 runs for second wicket but still could not manage to guide the Sri Lankan side total past 120 mark.
Defending the modest total, Chanaka Welegedara gave Wayamba a dream start, getting the vital wicket of Rob Quiney with Victoria yet to open their account.

Victoria seemed to be back in cruise control when Brad Hodge slammed a six over long-on in the fourth over and Aiden Blizzard swiped a boundary to midwicket three balls later. However, Blizzard was bowled next delivery by Welegedara, bringing together Hodge and David Hussey, the two leading run-getters in Twenty20s.

He struck again in the fifth over with Aiden Blizzard give away a simple catch to Ajantha Mendis at mid-off to see Victoria in a spot of bother. With just 83 runs in sight to progress to the next stage, Brad Hodge and David Hussey played cautiously to add 28 runs for the fourth wicket before the latter was cleaned up by Farvez Mahroof to add little spice to what otherwise was a dull match.

Earlier, Wayamba’s hardly displaying any power in the Powerplays. The top order mistimed plenty of strokes, and adding to the lack of boundaries was panicky running; several suicidal singles were pinched but Victoria just couldn’t get a direct hit. They were cruising merrily till the 15th over when McKay’s double strikes jolted them. Vandort, who had overcome his early sluggishness to strike three fours and a six in his 44-ball stay, had his timbers disturbed by McKay.

Wayamba played splendidly to pull off a surprise win. That didn’t stop Victoria from making it to round two, to which both Australian sides have carried over two points as well.

Sussex v Eagle:

Sussex 119 for 7 (Gatting 25, de Villiers 2-20, du Preez 2-23) tied with Eagles 119 for 4 (Rossouw 65, Chawla 2-17, Hamilton-Brown 2-15)

Player of the match RR Rossouw (Eagles)

Diamond Eagles have progressed to the second round of the tournament as a result of wickets in successive balls by Cornelius de Villiers in the Super Over. The Eagles managed nine in the shootout but when Sussex came out to bat, CJ de Villiers clean bowled Dwayne Smith and Rory Hamilton-Brown in a matter of just two balls to seal a second-round spot for Eagles.

This is how Superover was bowled by both the sides:

Arafat bowled for Sussex to Rossouw.

Ball 1: Single. Ball 2: another Single, Ball 3: No run there, Ball 4: Six, Ball 5: dot ball, Ball 6: Single. Eagles finish with nine.

CJ de Villiers bowled for Eagles.

Ball 1: Bowled out. What a start for Eagles.

Ball 2: Rory Hamilton-Brown bowled out.

What a great match. Best match of the tournament so far!!

Eagles are through after the Superover. They were cruising towards victory when their openers were going strong, but the boundaries dried up after that and it needed a boundary off the last ball to take the match to a Super Over. They only made 53 runs in the 12 overs before the final one.

A desperate swing by Ryan McLaren off the last ball of the chase went screeching towards the deep midwicket boundary to seal the first tie of the Champions League which was decided by the one-over eliminator. The Eagles were cruising to victory at one stage in the chase of a modest 120 but suddenly started to crumble under pressure in the last five overs.

Earler, Sussex opted to bat but the top order failed to give a good account of themselves against the Eagles, who put in a disciplined and enthusiastic performance in the field. Sussex limped to 119, below-par by Twenty20 standards, but a potentially match-wining one on a typically slow-and-low pitch at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Luke Wright, making his first appearance after a one-match absence, wasted no time in settling in as he sent his first ball over the sightscreen. He followed that up with another clean hit against Cornelius de Villiers before the bowler hit back in the same over by knocking back the off stump following an overconfident swish across the line. Sussex lost their trump card at the top and the batsmen rarely dominated since his departure.

With the wicketkeeper upto the stumps, Sussex found it difficult to hit with confidence. Their top draw in the middle order, Dwayne Smith, too struggled to put the ball away and in frustration, inside edged onto his off stump. Michael Yardy and Ed Joyce had to grind it out by picking up the singles. There staged a brief recovery with a fifth-wicket stand of 24 before Yardy chopped Ryan Bailey onto his stumps.

Sussex couldn’t push on for a while after he departed and the boundary drought lasted 32 balls before Joe Gatting clubbed du Preez over deep midwicket. Gatting and Piyush Chawla tried to push the scoring towards the end and succeeded in finding a couple of boundaries.
