Champions League T20 star: Van der Merwe (Somerset)

Somerset star Roelof Van der Merwe already caught the attention of cricket fans with sensational all-round performances in 2011 CLT20. His tidy bowling, explosive batting, dare devil spirit and never say die attitude mesmerised cricket lovers like me. When Yusuf Pathan and Jacques Kallis are decimating Somerset bowlers, Van der Merwe took the ball and controlled them with clever bowling. Then, Van der Merwe brutally attacked KKR bowlers on a slow Hyderabad wicket as if it was a batting paradise. This South African bowling allrounder plays for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and for Titans in the South African domestic cricket. He played for South Africa in both T20 and one day formats but failed to establish his place in the squad.  CLT20 History: 2008: His team, Nashua Titans qualified for CLT20 but tournament was cancelled due to terrorist attacks in Mumbai. 2009 & 2010: His IPL team (Royal challengers) qualified for Champions League but he was not picked. 2011: He is playing for Somerset as Titans and Delhi Daredevils failed to qualify for CLT20.  Van der Merwe performance in 2011 CLT20 cricket: 1. Against Auckland: 25/1 in 4 overs & 18 runs in 16 balls. 2. Against Kolkata Knight Riders: 23/2 in 4 overs & 40 runs in 25 balls. 3. Against Kolkata Knight Riders: 21/0 in 4 overs & 73 runs in 40 balls.  High-lights of Van der Merwe career: 1. He played for South Africa at the Under-19 World Cup in 2004. 2. Third leading wicket-taker in PRO20 series in 2007-08 – 13 wickets in 30 overs. 3. South Africa’s leading run-scorer and wicket-taker in the 2008 Hong Kong International Cricket Sixes 4. Leading wicket-taker in the MTN domestic championship in 2008-09 – 30 wickets in 70 overs. 5. South African player of the year in 2008-09. Cricket needs more fighters like Van der Merwe.  … [Read more...]

CLT20 Live:KKR Vs Somerset

Kolkata Knight Riders Champions League squad

IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will take on Engalnd domestic T20 runners-up Somerset at Uppal stadium in Hyderabad. In the qualifying stage, Somerset defeated KKR by 11 runs. Depleted Somerset (absence of Kieswetter & Buttler) played wonderfully in the qualifying matches. Both teams have wonderful T20 all-rounders but Kolkata has experienced batsmen like Jacques Kallis, Gautam Gambhir and Ryan ten Doeschate. But, Somerset is one of the most spirited teams in 2011 CLT20 tournament - good to see such passionate players on the ground. Toss: KKR captain Gautam Gambhir wins the toss and decided to bat first. CLT20 Score: KKR: 161/3 in 20 overs & Somerset: 164/5 in 19.4 overs. Match result: Somerset defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 5 wickets.  Man of the match: Van der Merwe (Somerset) - he scored third fastest fifty in CLT20 history. I liked his attitude. Wonderful innings: Jacques Kallis (KKR) - 74 runs in 61 balls (4 fours & 4 sixers).  CLT20 Records: 1. Highest runs in an over - Arul Suppiah gave 30 runs against KKR (Yusuf Pathan hit 4 sixers). 2. Somerset scored highest runs in first 10 overs in CLT20 history - 107/1 in 10 overs.  Live ratings for KKR Vs Somerset Cricketers:  Gautam Gambhir returns for KKR while Dockrell replaced Marshall for Somerset. KKRRatingSomersetRatingBatsmen: Gautam Gambhir  0/10  James Hildreth  0/10 Manoj Tiwary  6/10  Nick Compton  6/10 Rajat Bhatia  7/10  Chris Jones  1/10       All-Rounders: Jacques Kallis  9/10  Alfonso Thomas  6/10 Ryan Ten Doeschate  5/10  Van der Merwe  10/10 Shakib al Hasan  6/10  Peter Trego  7/10 Yusuf Pathan  7/10  Arul Suppiah  0/10Wicket-Keeper: Manvinder Bisla  6/10  Steve Snell  5/10 … [Read more...]
